So I read a great piece of flash fiction a few months back, in a world where children stepping on cracks really does break their mothers' backs and so the big struggle for women is whether or not to bear children, knowing that they may well end up crippled by it eventually. Does anyone remember this piece and remember the title or author?

This was a really useful article. Some highlights:

“Every writing session after this realization, I dedicated five minutes (sometimes more, never less) and wrote out a quick description of what I was going to write. Sometimes it wasn’t even a paragraph, just a list of this happens then this then this. This simple change, these five stupid minutes, boosted my wordcount enormously. I went from writing 2k a day to writing 5k a day within a week…”

“…my productivity was at its highest when I was in a place other than my home. That is to say, a place without internet. The afternoons I wrote at the coffee shop with no wireless were twice as productive as the mornings I wrote at home. I also saw that, while butt in chair time is the root of all writing, not all butt in chair time is equal.”

“Those days I broke 10k were the days I was writing scenes I’d been dying to write since I planned the book. They were the candy bar scenes, the scenes I wrote all that other stuff to get to. By contrast, my slow days (days where I was struggling to break 5k) corresponded to the scenes I wasn’t that crazy about.”

I’m going to try to do more coffee shop writing in the next couple of weeks as well as put more time into planning (I just outlined the story I want to write today, for example, scene by scene) and see what effect it has.

SteamCon, 2011

Headed back into SteamCon in another hour or so for a couple of panels, one at 11 on H.G. Wells and one at 2 on "Rustproof Steampunk" (underwater stuff, of which I can think of only a few.) I've got to say, I really think it's one of the better organized cons around, and holy cow, are the costumes gorgeous. I go wearing my jeans rather than try to assemble some half-assed costume that simply could not measure up to some of the creations wandering around.

The reading last night was fine, and the subsequent panel (I should be posting the notes next week) a good and lively one, plus I got to meet someone else writing about VIctoria Woodhull! I'm pre-odering Michelle Black's SEANCE IN SEPIA, which comes out next week, right now!.

A lovely photo for your delight. I love the sense of motion in it.

As I said in class, no one knows yet what will happen with Google+, but it’s off to a very strong start, and the responsiveness of the Google team to feedback and suggestions has been remarkable. For those of us already using Google products like Gmail, Google docs, and Google Analytics, it’s looking pretty promising.
